Who we are
The Neighbourhood Union “Solidarity in Favoriten” is an organisation based in (Inner-)Favoriten. We meet in the neighbourhood and fight together for a better life.
Solidarity means for us: we follow to the motto “touch one – touch all”. This means that if a member is treated unfairly and wants to stand up for themselves, we all help and fight together with that person.
What we do and why
We want to build structures of mutual aid to make tangible improvements to our living conditions. We want to do this together with other people in the neighbourhood.
We do not want the rich to become ever richer and more powerful1 whilst poverty, war, the climate crisis and discrimination2 make life difficult for many of us. So we are fighting for concrete improvements to our living conditions. And we are fighting for a fundamentally different society in which these problems do not arise in the first place.
Our goal is a world and an economy in which the focus is on the well-being of all3 people and nature.
Such a fundamental, radical change in society must come from a social movement in which many people participate. That is why we are networking with other organisations and local trade unions. A good life in Favoriten must not mean that injustice occurs in other parts of the world. We think internationally.4
How we work
Making decisions together:
The Neighbourhood Union is a grassroots democratic organisation and has no leaders. This means that the organisation belongs to its active members. Decisions are made collectively. They apply to all members.
Independent:
The Neighbourhood Union is independent of state institutions, political parties, companies, official trade unions and religious institutions. We only accept financial support if we do not have to alter our principles.
Mutual respect:
Mutual respect is a foundation of the Neighbourhood Union. Respect means that we take each other seriously and listen to one another, even in times of conflict. We respect other people’s boundaries. Anyone who acts in a discriminatory or violent manner towards other members or other people, and who is unwilling to engage with criticism, can no longer be a member.
Open for mistakes:
We have all grown up in a world full of injustice, oppression and prejudice. These experiences shape us. We will not always manage to be respectful and avoid discriminating against anyone. We will make mistakes. We want to learn from one another and point out to each other when we speak or act in a discriminatory manner.
Awareness of differences5:
We have grown up in different ways and had different experiences. We have different knowledge, and varying amounts of time and energy. Some of us experience more disadvantage or discrimination than others. We want to talk about these differences and break down inequalities.
Considering and breaking down barriers:
Wien-Favoriten is diverse and multilingual. As a neighbourhood union, we want to be that way too. Different languages and translation are part of that for us. Similarly, not everyone can participate in meetings or discussions in the same way. If people face barriers to moving around, listening, speaking or reading, we want to break these down.
Learning together:
We all have a personal wealth of knowledge and experience. We want to share this. We also want to learn from those who have fought before us. As not everyone has the same access to this knowledge, we want to educate and empower ourselves together.
